All I Want For Christmas

Somehow I’ve gone from happily mulling over my own Christmas list to now having the responsibility for three. One for my husband who claims to want nothing (but is always very pleased with the presents when he gets them [except one that I bought last year which was a disaster and is now at the charity shop]) yet my family demand a list whether he wants anything or not. Hence why I write it. Then there’s one for my almost-two-year-old which is actually pretty fun and has things on it like – a scooter, a book about diggers and Marble Run. Easy peasy. And then there’s mine, and by the time you’ve already written two lists most of the charm of coming up with ideas has fizzled away. My list has gone from being a carefully planned masterpiece to a last minute scribble anything down. To give you an idea my list has at the top: a nice jumper – round neck, not too chunky. See what I mean…as lists go, it’s lacking imagination and spark!

So I figured that under the heading All I Want For Christmas, I’d go a bit less present-giving literal because I’ve finally reached an age (that probably should have been about ten years ago) where it’s the places, the sounds, the tastes, the sights and the people that make Christmas how Christmas should be.

So this is what I really want for Christmas:

  • I want my sister to do her sweep of all the little delicatessens in the area and bring her now infamous hamper of goodies when we all go to my parents’ house in Cornwall over the Christmas/ New Year period. It’s filled with treasures that you never eat during the year like little marzipan fruits, panettone, flashy marmalades, rich, thick hot chocolate and weird and wonderful jellies to go with cheese. It’s a hundred percent food luxury.
  • I’d like us to have our usual friends and family Christmas Eve get-together – for it to be all cold and dark in the streets but warm and cosy in the pub. I’m more than happy for there to be a roaring open fire, twinkling fairy-lights, lots of red wine and perhaps even a sing song (the latter has never happened before).
  • I want us all to bundle up in our hats, coats, scarves and gloves (even if it’s not that cold) and go for a stroll after lunch on Christmas Day. And I’d really like it if all the neighbours could make sure their curtains are left open so we can peer in and get a glimpse of their Christmas Days.
  • I want everyone to be filled with merriment and joy, peace and goodwill/ have no blazing rows.
  • I would like at least one game of charades.
  • I want to be wowed by the amazing Christmas lights at Mousehole in Cornwall, stroll round the harbour in awe and then pop to the lovely old pub for a festive shandy.
  • I want to hold my nerve and swim in the sea on New Year’s Day again. (And not get a streaming cold afterwards!)
  • Oh and I’d really like my jumper – round neck, not too chunky!

Happy Christmas all! I hope you get exactly what you want.

about jenny oliver

Jenny Oliver wrote her first book on holiday when she was ten years old. Illustrated with cut-out supermodels from her sister’s Vogue, it was an epic, sweeping love story not so loosely based Dynasty.

Since then Jenny has gone on to get an English degree and a job in publishing that’s taught her what it takes to write a novel (without the help of the supermodels). She wrote her first book The Parisian Christmas Bake Off on the beach in a notebook that would end up covered in sand each afternoon and damp from the sea. This time the inspiration was her addiction to macarons, the belief she can cook them and an all-consuming love of Christmas. When the decorations go up in October, that’s fine with her!

Jenny’s books also feature her love of all things vintage, Sunday morning car boot sales (on the hunt for the thrill of a bargain) and an unwavering belief in happy ever after! (Whatever she’s loving on TV might crop up as well!)

So far Jenny’s books The Parisian Christmas Bake Off, The Vintage Summer Wedding and The Little Christmas Kitchen have enjoyed chart positions in the major supermarkets and other fabulous book shops. Most recently she has written a brand new ebook series, all set around the idyllic Cherry Pie Island, that kicks off with The Grand Reopening of Dandelion Café and (currently) ends with Four Weddings and a White Christmas! Mouthwatering, feel-good and perfect for curling up with on cold winter days.
