Book Review: ‘Lost Girls’ by Angela Marsons

Two girls go missing. Only one will return.

The couple that offers the highest amount will see their daughter again. The losing couple will not. Make no mistake. One child will die.

When nine-year-old best friends Charlie and Amy disappear, two families are plunged into a living nightmare. A text message confirms the unthinkable; that the girls are the victims of a terrifying kidnapping.

And when a second text message pits the two families against each other for the life of their children, the clock starts ticking for D.I. Kim Stone and the squad.

Seemingly outwitted at every turn, as they uncover a trail of bodies, Stone realises that these ruthless killers might be the most deadly she has ever faced. And that their chances of bringing the girls home alive, are getting smaller by the hour…

Untangling a dark web of secrets from the families’ past might hold the key to solving this case. But can Kim stay alive long enough to do so? Or will someone’s child pay the ultimate price?

Hi, my name is Ana and I have an addiction.

I can’t imagine my life without love, my family, coffee, laptop and Angela Marsons books.

Yes, I’m addicted to Angela Marsons’ books…

My addiction dates back from February this year, when a lethal dose of ‘Silent Scream’ was injected into my system.

No thriller book ever tasted the same. It overshadowed all the other books my mind was trying to hold firm in its memory.

Every time I’d read a thriller I would compare it to Angela Marsons’ DI Kim series.

Futile and childish… there’s only ONE Angela Marsons, and no cure for my addiction…

In less than a year, Ms Marsons has published 3 novels which are the best thriller/crime books I’ve ever read (as stated in my rather poetic intro). Ever since I read ‘Silent Scream’ which was published by Bookouture in February this year, I absolutely fell in love with her unique writing style, way she keeps the plot running at perfect pace, not letting you lose interest even for the tiniest second. Her stories get you immediately hooked and haunt you for days, weeks even months after you’ve finished them. But what I love the most and certainly why I’m most grateful to Ms Marsons for, is DI Kim Stone who’s the ULTIMATE fictional heroine. She’s such a strong character, so clever and persistent in her fight with criminals. Her family history is so sad, yet Kim rose above it all, building a wall around herself (which is totally understandable considering what she’s been through as a child) and she simply doesn’t give in. Not until justice is satisfied!

‘Lost Girls’ is the third part in the DI Kim Stone series and revolves around a case of two missing 9 year old girls. 13 months ago same thing happened, however while one of the girls was released, the other one was never found. The case got cold and there were no new leads. But now, DI Kim is on this second case, she refuses to let the same thing happen and will do everything to get Charlie and Amy back to their parents. Kim is trying to find the connection between these two cases and see the pattern these criminals work by. Do they want money? Will there be a ransom? The missing girls are best friends and even their families are very strong connected. But once the two families start receiving messages from the kidnappers, their friendship is starting to crumble. Will DI Kim forbid the past to repeat itself and will she find both girls alive?

I absolutely adored every single page! There’s not a single dull moment in this book. Everything is happening at such speed, you simply won’t be able to put the book down. I adore how Ms Marsons built the tension and put her characters into these wicked situations, situations where not only their strength but also their mind was tested. This psychological game reminded me of my favourite horror movies, ‘Saw’. Some choices are just too hard to make, and some situations seem without a solution. But DI Kim strongly believes there’s always a way, a choice, but what’s the cost?

Kim and Bryant are such a dynamic duo, and I adore the way they communicate and understand each other. They’ve accepted each other the way they are, and their bond is so strong. As partners, they’ve been through a lot together, solving many cases and they are definitely a winning team. Despite being so strong and having this wall around herself, Kim does let Bryant through, though not completely sharing her history. So, in a way, through this partnership with Bryant we see the more gentle and friendly side of Kim, and think Bryant is definitely a character which is much needed in these books and I seriously hope we will get to see more and more from him in the next parts.

‘While I admit to having high expectations, Ms Marsons exceeded them completely! There were so many twists I didn’t expect and I was holding my breath till the very end, wondering and even worrying what will happen next. There were loads of biting nail moments when the story would take a completely unexpected turn, which is fascinating and simply doesn’t allow you to relax or predict anything. Ms Marsons simply pulls you in and holds you tight completely immersed in her fictional world. As her two previous books, ‘Lost Girls’ is an amazingly gripping, intense, action-packed book and definitely one of my favourites this year. If you ask me which one of the three books so far is my favourite, that would be impossible to answer. It would be as asking me which of my two children is my favourite… and you know that’s the worst and most impossible question to answer for a parent. So, do not ask me, do not doubt me or Ms Marsons’ writing and if you haven’t read any of her books yet, you are missing out on SO much! There will be eight books in the series, but this is honestly the only series I wish never to end. I would be not only content but thrilled if there were three new books each year. YES, this series is so bloody good!

To sum it up, ‘Lost Girls’ is a book not to be missed! No matter how big your TBR pile is, no matter how many commitments you have, this is a book you’ll devour in just one sitting. Without a doubt, another gem from the MASTER of the thriller/crime genre. Sit back, people and enjoy the ride! It’s going to be one hell of a ride, trust me!

My rating: 10/10
