The most wonderful time of the year?
Katie Warham has just one wish this year…to have the best Christmas ever!
If only she could lock herself away in a cloud of flour and sugar at her cosy little tearoom, Crumbtious Cakes, instead of spending the festive season trapped with her judgemental mother, crazy Aunt Gina and loved-up celebrity brother Carl…
But Katie never expected her ex-boyfriend, widower Sam – and his two adorable children – to turn up on her doorstep. She didn’t think that any man could tempt her under the mistletoe this year, but Sam might just prove the exception! And as the snow begins to fall and Katie puts the final touches to her famous Christmas cake, she begins to wonder, could her Christmas wish actually come true?

‘Wish Upon a Christmas Cake’ is Darcie Boleyn’s debut and such a sweet, romance read. The cover is simply stunning, and I think the team from Carina UK had done an amazing job on the cover art.
‘Wish Upon a Christmas Cake’ is a story about old sweethearts, and I absolutely adore those kind of stories. Katie and Sam used to be together (for years actually), but after an unfortunate event shaken their lives, they parted amicably and moved on with their lives. Katie decided to focus on her work and never look back on her past, however seems she doesn’t have much success in her love life. Her parents invite her and the rest of the family in a gorgeous manor to spend the Christmas together. As one of closest and oldest friends of her brother Carl, Sam is invited too and after years of not seeing each other, Katie and Sam are now in the same house spending the most beautiful and magical time of year together.
Many things have changed for both of them, both Sam and Katie tried to move on with their lives, however the sparks are still there and Katie just might get her Christmas wish come true.
This was such an adorable, and fast read. I really liked the story, though it did have a more serious tone at times. It was so enjoyable to see how things were gradually building and the romance didn’t seemed rushed or forced. As most of the other light hearted Christmas stories, it was predictable but it didn’t mean I enjoyed it less because of it. On the contrary, I was thrilled I’ll get my dose of a big fat happily ever after and I sure got it.
Sam was an adorable character, he’s gentle and kind and though he’s been unfortunate first by losing Katie, then his wife, he’s a dedicated father and an amazing friend. He appreciates the people in his life and does everything to make them happy. However, Katie was less likable, in my opinion. She’s focused on her work and despite fully understanding what happened to her, I simply didn’t approve of some of her choices. She seemed doubtful without a real reason, and I didn’t understand why she needed so much time to realize some things. The romance was sweet yet dragged at times, and I wished things could move faster.
‘Wish Upon a Christmas Cake’ might not be that memorable Christmas book for me, but it was definitely an enjoyable one. Perfect for curling up by the fire on these cold November days. If you’re a romance fan, or love your story with a bit of Christmas magic and sparkle, then this is a book you’ll love to check out. Despite it being a debut, it’s clear Ms Boleyn has a talent, and I’ll definitely be on a watch out for her next release.
My rating: 6/10
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Darcie Boleyn has a huge heart and is a real softy. She never fails to cry at books and movies, whether the ending is happy or not. Darcie is in possession of an overactive imagination that often keeps her awake at night.
Her childhood dream was to become a Jedi but she hasn’t yet found suitable transport to take her to a galaxy far, far away. She also has reservations about how she’d look in a gold bikini, as she rather enjoys red wine, cheese and loves anything with ginger or cherries in it – especially chocolate.
Darcie fell in love in New York, got married in the snow, rescues uncoordinated greyhounds and can usually be found reading or typing away on her laptop.
