Welcome to the charming seaside town of White Cliff Bay, where Christmas is magical and love is in the air…

Penny Meadows loves her home – a cosy cottage decorated with pretty twinkling fairy lights and stunning views over the town of White Cliff Bay. She also loves her job as an ice-carver, creating breathtaking sculptures. Yet her personal life seems frozen.

When Henry and daughter Daisy arrive at the cottage to rent the annex, Penny is determined to make them feel welcome. But while Daisy is friendly, Henry seems guarded.

As Penny gets to know Henry, she realises there is more to him than meets the eye. And the connection between them is too strong to ignore…

While the spirit of the season sprinkles its magic over the seaside town and preparations for the ice sculpting competition and Christmas eve ball are in full swing, can Penny melt the ice and allow love in her heart? And will this finally be the perfect Christmas she’s been dreaming of?

Like a creamy hot chocolate with marshmallows, you won’t want to put this deliciously heartwarming novel down.

In a short time span of just couple of years, Holly Martin has managed to write so many novels, successfully switching from fantasy, to contemporary romance then to chick lit. In just two months, she’s releasing two Christmas novels which are parts of the White Cliff Bay Series.

‘Christmas at Lilac Cottage’ is the first one in the series and is such a charming, cute read. It follows the story of Penny who’s an ice carver and is living alone in a cosy cottage in the picturesque White Cliff Bay. She’s single by choice, as she hasn’t had much luck in love. Her previous relationship ended up bad and got her so hurt, she’s very afraid of committing again. Henry and Daisy are arriving at White Cliff Bay, renting the annex of Penny’s cottage. There are immediate sparkles between Henry and Penny, but it’s not just Penny who’s been hurt terribly in the past. Henry was too, and really really bad. Is there a chance the magic of Christmas will touch them both? As always in fiction, everything is possible at Christmas.

‘Christmas at Lilac Cottage’ was a very fast read for me. It is bit more than 200 pages and Ms Martin’s writing is so easy to understand you’ll be flying through it. I liked Penny from the very beginning, she seems as someone fragile, but also as someone who’d do anything for a loved one or a friend. She’s such a nice girl, the one everyone would like to hang out with. I loved the fact she’s an ice carver, creating these beautiful ice sculptures and showing Daisy how to make one herself. Henry seemed very uptight at the beginning, but very soon I got totally in love with him. He’s one of these protective, but not too protective or obsessive men who’d be an ideal partner for Penny.

As always when it comes to Ms Martin’s romances, the romance was sweet but not cheesy, which I seriously respect. There’s a lot of banter between Henry and Penny and sometimes they seemed like little kids, trying to decide what actually is going on between them and what do they want for their future. They are drawn to each other right from the very beginning, which is something I usually dislike in a book, but now I realize it’s not the insta-love I have trouble with but with the author’s writing style. Obviously, in this case as it was so sweet and beautifully described, the insta-love was not giving me that much trouble. At times though I wanted to give them both a good shake and make them smell the coffee, as there was a lot of cat-mouse chase. It’s like everyone around them could see their chemistry but they were so insecure and afraid to make something more out of their relationship.

Anyway, one of the best things about reading a Christmassy book is feeling that Christmas cheerful spirit, which this book definitely brings. I adored the setting, could smell the sea and see Penny and Henry having fun at the rink.

Overall this was such a delightful read and one I certainly recommend to everyone in good of good Christmas story and sweet romance. Beautiful setting and characters you’ll root for, ‘Christmas at Lilac Cottage’ is definitely a must read for the holiday season. Once again Ms Martin manages to deliver and create a beautiful, charming, modern love story with unique and lovable characters that will stay with you for a long time.
